Tye Jonas leaves his life as a successful writer in New York to revisit the sadness of his upbringing in Western Kansas. He arrives, and the grief of his childhood sends him back to New York.  He passes a car with a flat tire and meets a young mother with twin five-year-old boys. They part but meet again. Tye is shocked to find that this young mother is the wife of his childhood best friend who died in his arms in battle. Over the next few days, they are spiritually shoved together again and again by her husband, who is choosing the best man as a father for the sons he never got to meet.
